When you Use a Retail Pharmacy

When you use an NBN/Rx Pharmacy:

  • Present your WTWT identification card or identify yourself as a participant or dependent of the Western Teamsters Welfare Trust.
  • The pharmacist will ask for certain identification information (i.e., the Social Security number of the eligible employee and the patient’s date of birth), and will enter this information into a computer terminal. (The terminal is electronically linked to a data base which transmits pricing and benefit information back to the pharmacist.)
  • The pharmacist may recommend alternative medications after consulting with the patient’s physician.
  • The pharmacist will fill the prescription up to a maximum 34-days supply.
  • You pay the pharmacist 100% of the NBN/Rx discounted prescription price.
  • The network pharmacy will submit your claim automatically, and the Trust will mail your reimbursement as soon as possible.

When a network pharmacy is used, qualified generic drugs will be substituted when permitted by the prescribing physician. This is one of the most important features of this program given the wide cost difference between generic and brand name drugs. Participants may override this policy if they do not wish to accept a generic drug. Reimbursement in such cases, however, will be based upon the generic price and the brand copay will apply.

When you use a Non-network Pharmacy:

  • You have a prescription filled at a non-network pharmacy. The Plan will allow a maximum of 34-days supply.
  • You pay the pharmacist 100% of the retail prescription price.
  • The pharmacy will supply you with a receipt which must include the drug name, the “National Drug Code,” the quantity and the price of the prescription. The pharmacist must sign the Trust claim form, and if the receipt does not include all the above information, must complete the “Pharmacist” section of the claim form.
  • You should complete the “Employee Section” of the claim form, sign and mail the form to your Area Administrative Office for reimbursement.

You are not required to use an NBN/Rx network Pharmacy; however, your out-of-pocket costs in most cases will be less if you do.

When You Use the Mail Order Program
You can further reduce your out-of-pocket prescription drug costs and save time by ordering medication through Merck-Medco Rx Services. This program has been designed mainly for individuals using maintenance type medications (for periods of 60 days or longer) for the treatment of chronic or long-term conditions such as, but not limited to, diabetes, arthritis, heart conditions, asthma and high blood pressure. This program is not intended for medications needed immediately.

Using mail delivery to your home, you can get up to a 100-day supply at one time, paying a copayment. (See benefit reimbursement schedule, page 56.) The first, and possibly second, order for a new prescription may be limited to a 34-day supply to determine patient tolerance and the effectiveness of the new drug.

How to Use the Mail Order Program
To obtain prescriptions through the Merck-Medco Rx Services, complete and mail an “order envelope” along with an original prescription, and a check for the required co-payment, if any. If you would like to bill your credit card, you can include the necessary information as required on the order envelope. Your prescription should arrive within 14 days from the date mailed. Information regarding how to send for refills will be included with your original prescription.
